What Is Christian Life Coaching—And Is It Right for You?

What Is Christian Life Coaching—And Is It Right for You?

I still remember the moment a woman — I'll call her Sarah — sat across from me and said something I've heard hundreds of times since: "I've read all the right books. I go to church every Sunday. I serve in three different ministries. So why do I still feel so lost?"

She wasn't looking for a therapist. She wasn't in crisis. She was a high-achieving, faith-filled woman who had done all the "right things" — and still felt like something was missing. Like she was performing her life rather than actually living it.

What Sarah needed wasn't more information. She needed someone to walk alongside her as she rediscovered who she was in Christ — and what God had uniquely designed her to do in this season. She needed a Christian life coach.

If you've found yourself wondering what Christian life coaching actually is — and whether it's for you — keep reading. I'm going to break it down in plain language so you can make an informed, prayerful decision.

So, What Exactly Is Christian Life Coaching?

Christian life coaching is a forward-focused, goal-oriented partnership between a trained coach and a client — with biblical truth as the foundation and God's purposes as the compass.

Unlike therapy, which typically explores the past to heal wounds, coaching focuses primarily on where you're going. A Christian life coach helps you:

  • Clarify your God-given purpose
  • Identify the beliefs and patterns that are keeping you stuck
  • Build practical strategies to move forward
  • Stay accountable to the life God has called you to live

Think of it this way: a therapist helps you understand the root system of a tree. A life coach helps you prune and cultivate the branches so the tree can bear the fruit it was created to produce.

And when that coaching is distinctly Christian? The entire process is anchored in Scripture, guided by the Holy Spirit, and grounded in the belief that you are not an accident — you are a carefully designed woman with a God-given calling that this world needs.

What Does a Christian Life Coach Actually Do?

In our sessions, I work with women on things like:

Discovering and clarifying their purpose. So many Christian women have a sense that God has something more for them, but they can't quite name it. We do the deep work of uncovering your gifts, your passions, and the unique assignment God has written into your DNA.

Breaking free from comparison and performance. One of the most damaging lies Christian women believe is that their worth is tied to what they accomplish. In my book, Beyond Rubies, I call this "the performance spindle" — the exhausting cycle of spinning your identity out of achievements, approval, and productivity. Coaching helps you step off that treadmill for good.

Building emotional and relational health. Proverbs 31:26 says she "speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue." That kind of wisdom doesn't come from just reading the right books — it comes from doing the inner work.

Moving through transitions with clarity. Whether you're navigating a career shift, a relationship season, an empty nest, or a calling you've been too scared to pursue — coaching gives you a sacred space to process, plan, and step forward with courage.

How Is Christian Life Coaching Different From Therapy?

Therapy (also called counseling or psychotherapy) is a licensed clinical practice designed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, process trauma, and heal psychological wounds.

Christian life coaching is a non-clinical partnership focused on growth, goals, and forward movement. It is not a substitute for therapy — and a good Christian life coach will always know when to refer a client to a licensed mental health professional.

Here's where I'm a little different: I hold a Doctorate in Psychology and I'm a certified Christian life coach. That means I bring clinical insight into our coaching conversations without it becoming therapy. I understand trauma responses, anxiety patterns, and attachment wounds — and I can help you recognize these dynamics in your own life while still keeping us focused on your God-given purpose and next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be struggling to benefit from coaching? Absolutely not. Many of my clients are high-functioning women who simply feel called to something more. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from coaching.

How long does coaching take? That depends entirely on your goals. Some women work with me for a focused 90-day sprint; others engage in longer-term work across multiple seasons.

Is Christian coaching biblical? Yes. Proverbs 15:22 tells us, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Christian life coaching is a structured form of that ancient wisdom.

What if I also need therapy? Then we'll talk about that honestly. Your wellbeing matters more to me than any coaching relationship.

So Is Christian Life Coaching Right for You?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you feel a pull toward something more — a purpose, a calling, a next chapter — but can't quite name it?
  • Are you tired of feeling like you're performing your faith rather than living it?
  • Do you have goals or dreams in front of you but feel paralyzed by fear or uncertainty?
  • Do you long for a safe, faith-filled space where someone truly sees you and helps you move forward?

If you answered yes to any of those — I'd love to have a conversation.

Your worth was established by God long before your first achievement and will remain unchanged regardless of your next failure. My job is to help you actually believe that — and then build a life that flows from that unshakeable foundation.
